PROJECT MANAGEMENT SERVICES TO TRANSFORM YOUR CAPABILITY TO DELIVER

Agile is a hot topic at the moment. Agile approaches in software-intense developments are of increasing interest to fast-paced, organisations, and it is impacting project management and project managers.

Currently, the response to Agile varies. Some have embraced it wholeheartedly and have extended its use well beyond its original remit. Some have found it doesn’t work for everything. Regulatory-driven projects – including IT ones – don’t succeed with Agile’s “80% complete” scenario. Neither is it well suited to those projects where the requirements are well known and are not volatile.

That suggests that traditional project management approaches have their place, even in IT. Attention needs to be on when it is appropriate to use a predictive approach (‘Waterfall’), an adaptive approach (‘Agile’) or one that combines both – ‘Hybrid’.

A topic on Hybrid is included for the first time in the APM Body of Knowledge (APMBoK): ‘Context matters: there is no universally applicable one-size-fits-all life cycle. Hybrid life cycles enable a pragmatic mix of philosophies, typically fusing together elements from predictive and adaptive perspectives to create a new mode or approach’.

AGILITY IN PROJECT DELIVERY

Our new Agility in project delivery masterclass is not designed to teach methods; its value is in informing senior level judgement in recognising when and how to adapt project approaches in the project environment to achieve success. To get the most from the day, participants are expected to have knowledge and experience in overseeing project delivery and exposure to Waterfall and Agile development methods.

This masterclass is aimed at project and programme executives, directors, product owners and senior project and programme managers who are accountable for the safe delivery of business change. It focuses on the theory and application of shaping and structuring change initiatives.

MIXED METHOD APPROACHES

With two differing development and delivery approaches, considerations include: how to manage the initiative’s governance, particularly the reporting cycle and performance indicators and the stakeholders’ expectations;   how to assure a sponsor that the initiative is on track to achieve the desired benefits when the requirements are flexing;  how to link end of phase and sprint positions to the benefits position.

HYBRID BENEFITS

Shortening times for delivery, increasing rate of technological evolution, and rising complexity of solutions are clearly generating pressure in selecting delivery approaches away from predictive planning towards more adaptive responsive approaches despite, in some cases, the environment not being conducive to Agile. Where an environment dictates a predictive approach, the consideration is how to engineer agility (small ‘a’) into your delivery approach.

OUR APPROACH

CITI’s approach is based on experience and tried and tested intellectual property (IP) that we have developed over 30 years to ensure our clients achieve the right outcomes to meet objectives. A core element of our partnership approach will be our collaboration with you to ensure we:

  • fully understand your culture, needs and terminology
  • fully understand detailed your requirements and success criteria
  • the differences in working practices and fully understand project types
  • deliver the right ‘solutions’ by discussing the early drafts and designs
  • have and maintain good working relationships and trust
  • support the development and delivery of key communications
  • wherever possible transfer knowledge and skill to you.

HYBRID PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Three management systems are affected by the concept of Hybrid:

  1. The dialogue between the management of product development and the management of project delivery
  2. The interaction between project managers and sponsors and other stakeholders
  3. The interaction between sponsors, executives and stakeholders.
